How to Fix Your Acer Aspire One Netbook if it Does Not Power On or Display Anything

I’m sure a lot of you have run into problems with the Acer Aspire Netbooks. I’ve personally now seen 6 of the Acer Aspire Ones develop a problem where they will light up their little LEDS but nothing will come on the screen. So far I’ve sent these units to Acer for repairs. But I think I’ve found the solution.

Acting on a hunch that this was a BIOS corruption I searched the net and found this helpful tidbit:

The AA1 has a built-in BIOS recovery routine, making it possible to flash the BIOS even if the system doesn’t boot anymore. It’s only meant for emergencies and may void your warranty, so use at your own risk.

Follow every step carefully!

First format an USB stick with FAT.

Download the latest BIOS, and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file in the root directory of the stick. Rename the BIOS file to ZG5IA32.FD, that’s important. Do not remove the USB stick.

Turn the AA1 off, make sure both battery and AC adapter are connected. Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds, the power button will be blinking. Press the power button once. The AA1 will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances. After a while the power button will stop blinking, and the AA1 will reboot shortly after. Wait patiently.

The BIOS has been flashed and all settings reset to default.

If for some reason you made a mistake during the procedure and it doesn’t reboot by itself wait 5 minutes before turning it off, just to be safe that it isn’t still flashing the BIOS.

I have not tried this yet but I’ve decided to post it on the site so that I can update this post as soon as I try it out. If anyone gets a chance to try this please comment below.

  1. It’s not the BIOS. It’s not the battery. It’s the heat sensor. Try putting your POS Acer in the freezer for an hour or two. Take it out, plug it in and fire it up. It will work for maybe four minutes before shutting down but at least you can get it to stay on for more than 20 seconds just to prove what the problem really is. It’s a hardware issue.

  2. But people still have this problem when they’ve left their Acer sitting turned off for a long time.

I agree that the broken Acer Ones are hotter then normal but putting the entire notebook in the freezer seems to invite more damage then less.

The best thing to do is send it off to Acer if it’s under warranty.

  3. This fixed my broken Netbook! The official instructions are on the Acer web site here

    http://netbooks-us.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/66/session/L3NpZC91RzV5S2hUag==#nowhere

You have to release the buttons as soon as the power light on the power button starts to flash (not the AC power light on the left) You will then immediately see the USB stick access light start to flash away and you know you’re in business. Then everything goes quiet and you think “oh crap that didn’t work either” then suddenly – the BIOS screen appears and off you go!!!! WOOO!!!!

    Thanks!

  4. My acer aspire one will not come on at all, will not charge, and will not do anything. What is wrong with it?

  5. i did the same thing but it doesnt blink…please tell me how, i did those step but still its not blinking. hope my acer was not damaged.

    your help will be meaningful.

  6. Impossible to deduce from that short description. The fastest way to tell is to contact a local technician. They’ll fix your PC and you’ll give them some business. Win win. :)

  7. That is hard to believe howdie. However please be aware that ALL fixes on this site come with no warranty and you use at your own risk. This particular fix is a last hope type of thing.

  8. Well, this worked when I had lights but no power. Sadly, I now can’t get anything to happen with it. Even plugged in it doesn’t work. The charger does have a light indicating that gets power.

    Wish me luck.

  9. I ran the bios update and now it reboots every time during the boot process. I can go into Bios and it reboots and it even does it trying to go into safe mode.
    Help

  15. Hi, would this restore my netbook to its original form (factory settings)? Also how much memory must the USB stick be at minimum? How do I format this with FAT? Lastly I do not have internet connection on my netbook as the netbooks gone corrupt (hence need to flash it). Can I download the files on the USB from a different laptop (which does have internet access) and then use that USB on my netbook? Thanks for the help! x

  16. I’m 13, and my Acer quit working/charging after >1 year of having it. I will try anything! But, I REALLY am not good with technology, so these instructions are basically in another language to me. Is there any way you can dumb it down for me a little bit?
    Any help is appreciated:)

  17. Just to see, I pressed Fn and Esc for a few seconds (without the USB stick part) and it booted up again after sitting dead all day. Try this first=–very easy. No USB Bios flashing required.

So this is what I did:
    plugged in, battery in.
Held down FN and ESC for about ten seconds.
Power button blinked a few times and it came back on.
    Thanks!!

  18. If you can’t follow the above instructions then I genuinely suggest you find a computer savvy friend or local technician and have them take a look at your laptop. Show them this post.

BIOS flashes can seriously ruin your laptop is done incorrectly.

  19. 1. It will not wipe your hard drive. A BIOS flash will only affect the BIOS programming.
    2. You just need enough space on the flash drive to house the flash file.
    3. IMPORTANT: A wonky internet connection must likely does not require a BIOS flash. It’s probably something else. This BIOS flash fix is only if your netbook does not power up at all.
    4. Yes you can download the files on another computer.

  20. My aspireone happy doesn’t blink when following the instructions. Is it likely to work or do I need another method? Been trying all day!

  21. hi, my acer aspire notebook is not starting it gives me an to safe mode but i can’t fix the problem what do i have to do, when i started it on it will just hang up until the battery drops off..

  22. hi, my acer aspire notebook is not starting it gives me an option to safe mode but i can’t fix the problem what do i have to do, when i turn on or re start the button it will just hang up until the battery drops off..

  23. WOW. Acer doesn”t play nice. Thanks for the fix. It saved me the $100 that Acer wants to charge me just to send it to them.

  24. Your problem is different from the one that I wrote above in this post. Unfortunately a computer freezing and giving the user a Safe Mode prompt could be caused by a variety of problems. Probably best to bring your computer to a local computer technician so that they can have a look and run diagnostics.

  25. Chi,

Your problem could be caused by a large variety of problems. I suggest seeking out a local (reputable) computer technician who can diagnose your notebook and help you out.

  26. If any body can help me to solve this problem Something went wrong with your Aspire D250 BIOS? I follow these instructions but when it was waiting for restart the power cord got unploged accidently and now it does not work at all no power or nothing it dont turn on. any body that have any info in how to fix this problem I deeply apreciate it.

    1. First format an USB stick with FAT, if this option is not available use a smaller USB stick (eg 1Gig)
    2. Download the latest BIOS, and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file in the root directory of the stick. Do NOT rename the BIOS file, it should be KAV60.fd
    3. Now connect the USB stick to the AA1
Turn the AA1 off, DISCONNECT the battery but leaving the AC adapter connected. Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds. Press power button if it begins to blink, otherwise do nothing. The AA1 will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances. The AA1 will reboot shortly after. Wait patiently.
    4. The BIOS has been flashed and all settings reset to default.

  27. Absolutely marvelous – I love my little Acer and was devastated when it wouldn’t power up today. Flashed 3310 firmware from site linked above – excellent outcome! One thing – it is not necessary to press power once it is flashing – as Bob says above – just release Fn and Esc and the USB stick should start to flash indicating it is being read from. I’d buy you a beer if you were in the south west of England!

  28. So i tried holding fn+esc and pressed the power button to see if it would show up some kind of menu. it stayed with a black screen without the power buttton flashing. i turned it off. Now it wont turn on. any help with this? did i fry the laptop? send me a response at loveneko21@hotmail.com please. really desperate to find out

  29. Nixon: It’s impossible to know what’s wrong with your laptop without looking at it in person. It could be a variety of problems, it could be the problem described in the post or something else entirely.

Try this: Unplug your laptop and remove the battery. Then press down and hold the power button for about ten seconds. Then (with the battery still removed) plug the laptop back in and try turning it on. Anything?

  30. Like stated above interrupting the BIOS flash can damage the laptop. Try removing the battery and unplug the laptop, press the power button and hold for 10 seconds, then plug the laptop back in and try turning it on.

If you have no power then I’d suggest calling a local computer technician.

  31. Just completed the precedure with happy results; just be sure you type the filename correctly when renaming the file – I mistook the I for a 1 first off and it didn’t seem to work; the power light stopped flashing after 1 couple of minutes and nothing – tired again after copy/past teh file name and the power light stops after less than 1 minutes and then there is an unerving period of nothingness before it boots. Happy happy

  32. I have an asus Eee pc 1005PE with a bad flash update, everything was fine until the update, it got stuck on a screen that says “start programming” and it never leaves the screen. I’ve tried many things I read on posts but nothing changed, it powers on but there’s no post, it’s a brick…. is there any ideas, I took the motherboard apart, reset the cmos, tried loading an older bios update, tried bios recovery tools, but no success, the bios update from asus website is broken, the netbook was fine, i should’ve never done this update.

  33. Wow, Thanks very much,
I’ve had this netbook for years,
    Works like a charm!
Remember be patient wait a few minutes..
the LED light on the power might be turned off but then shortly after you system will start to boot up!

  34. When I first got my Aspire One Happy 2, I opened it up and applied a thermal compound (paste) in the CPU. You can also add a heatsink (with multiple pins) in the netbook’s default heatsink.

  35. i have a acer aspire one but it does’nt show anything when i tried to switch on power switch even though i tried to plug it and try to put the battery… and so whats the problem about my notebook!!!

  36. My netbook keeps tuning on then goes of with a red sybol showing whats the problem with it

  37. Acer has had issues ever since Ive had it three years ago. I tried above tips and BInGo it worked. Thanks a MILLIoN!

  38. OK I did what you said to do and it has been flashing for over and hour…What should I do now?
