red smilie icon , , , Red folder iconPosted in Apps, Questions

So you’ve purchased an app from the iTunes store and it doesn’t work or it doesn’t work like you expected it to. What do you do? Well there is a way you can request a refund from Apple for the app. First let’s review their policy.

In order to get a refund the app must have one of the following problems:

1) Corrupt or faulty in some way.
2) Different in appearance or function from the description in the App Store.
3) Unworkable in your geographic area.

If you situation matches this then simply drop off an email to: iTunesStoreSupport@apple.com with the following information:

* User Name

* Details about the problem you’re having and why you’re requesting a refund

* The iTunes Order Number (Can be found in your account)

Good luck!

A user writes that they are running into a strange error with their computer. They are trying to transfer files to an external hard drive when Windows throws up error code 0×8007045D.

This error code usually means that there is file corruption on your computers hard drive. Fortunately the problem is easy resolved by running a program called CHKDSK. It is included on every Windows computer free of charge.

To run the program open your “Computer” or “My Computer” folder. Right Click on the icon for the C drive. Click properties on the menu that opens. A Window will then pop-up. Click on the Tools tab. Then click on Check Now. Let the program run.

Hopefully that solves your problem.

Why does a monitor turn yellow or green?

red smilie icon , Red folder iconPosted in Questions

A few users have written to me asking why their monitors have screens that are randomly turning yellow or green. This is a common problem with computers as they go through their life cycle.

The problem is usually caused by a loose video cable. The first thing you should do is make sure that both ends of your video cable are snug and secure. Tighten the screws on both the monitor and the computer end of the cable.

If that doesn’t work you might need a new video cable. Thankfully these do not cost much and can be bought from your local computer or electronics store. Simply replace the old cable with the new one.

If your problem is still not solved then please write to me in the comments below and we’ll see if I can help.

Does your HP Printer disappear? This is how you fix it.

red smilie icon , , Red folder iconPosted in Fixes, Questions

Lauren Writes:

I just bought a new HP printer and installed it using the disc that came in the box. The problem is that every time I turn off or restart the printer it disappears! This is very annoying, what do I do? I called HP and they said it was a problem with Vista and want me to erase everything and reinstall. I really don’t want to do that.

This is an annoying problem indeed. It’s also one that I’ve run into before. Fortunately there is an easy fix.

How to make your HP Printer Stop Disappearing

This problem is caused by a program that HP installs in your computer when you first installed the printer. The program is called “HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service”. From the name I assume that it’s in charge of detecting HP devices connected to your computer. Unfortunately in some cases it fails to do its job and your devices remain undetected. Bummer.

To fix the problem simply disable HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service. Follow these simple steps.

startbutton

Click on Start.

services

In the Search field type in Services.msc then press Enter.

listed

The Services Manager will open. Scroll down to where you see HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service listed.

properties

Right-click on HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service and click Properties.

startuptype

A Window will open. For Startup type select Disabled.

apply

Click Apply then close the Window. Reboot your computer.

And your printer should be back!

What to do when your DVD Drive is not detected.

red smilie icon , , Red folder iconPosted in Fixes, Questions

I was recently asked to install a printer for someone. They had the CD, but I found out the DVD/CD player wasn’t responding. I looked in the device manager and noticed there wasn’t a DVD/CD listed. I tried the add new hardware but it said no new hardware found. It is a Presario F700 laptop with vista. They said the DVD/CD used to work. I’ve never came across this issue before. What is wrong and what should I do? Thanks for your time.

This is most likely caused by an upper/lower filter issue. Simply follow these steps and then reboot your computer.

  1. Open RegEdit (Start>Run> Type “regedit”)
  2. Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}”
  3. Delete the “UpperFilters” value.
  4. Delete the “LowerFilters” value.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. You might need to uninstall then reinstall any burning software you may have (Nero, iTunes, etc…) do this now.
