How to fix no sound on Toshiba laptops

Here are a serious of easy steps to take if your Toshiba laptop isn’t making any sound. Recently quite a few Toshiba owners has said they were not hearing sound.

These fixes are listed from simplest to complex.

Fix #1: Make sure your sound isn’t muted

In the lower right of your screen next to where the clock is there should be a little icon of a speaker. You might need to expand that section of icons if you have a lot.

Double-click on the sound icon and check the settings to make sure that the volume is set to the highest level and that your speakers are not muted.

And just to get the simple solutions out of the way make sure you restart your laptop as well. Sometimes a simple restart fixes a lot of issues.

Fix #2: Check to see if headphones or other speakers work

Unplug your speakers and plug in some headphones or another set of speakers. If you get sound then the problem probably lies with your original speakers and not the Toshiba laptop

Fix #3: Update your sound driver

It’s also possible that your sound driver is missing or has been damaged in some way. In order to fix both potential issues you should download the latest sound driver for your laptop.

You can find the driver for your laptop here. Simply enter your laptop’s model number (which can be found on the bottom of your laptop) and download and install the latest sound driver.

Then restart your laptop.

Fix #4: Perform A System Restore

The Windows System Restore utility can roll back your toshiba laptop to an earlier point of time to when your sound worked. If your sound problems are caused by software this has a good chance of solving them.

Instructions for performing a system restore:

Note: Make sure that you choose the instructions for a system restore and not a system reload. One will simply restore your computer’s files to an earlier point of time while keeping personal files. The other will wipe your system.

  5. This information is provided to users who suffer from the following Toshiba Satellite Laptop with Windows 7 where the speaker icon in the lower right of the tray does not respond. The volume is stuck at 67% and cannot be changed.

    1. Purchase a CR-2032 battery often used in key fobs. They are also used on computer boards for the Real-Time-Clock and for small amounts of battery backed memory. The volume is stored in this memory, and will be corrupted by a dead CR-2032. You will also lose the time and date settings each time the laptop is turned off or put into sleep mode.
    2. Acquire a very small Phillips head screwdriver from a hobby shop that fits the screws on the back of the laptop.
    3. Carefully remove the 14 or so screws from the back of the laptop. Make sure they are all out before you start prying.
    4. Disconnect power supply and remove the battery.
    5. Pry the back off by unsnapping it with a credit card. Don’t use a knife. Don’t stick the credit card into the machine by any more than about 1/4 inch (6 mm).
    6. Remove the CR-2032 battery for at least 10 minutes. Replace with the exact same battery in the exact same orientation. + is normally up.
    7. Snap the back on and replace the screws.
    8. Power up. You should get a BIOS screen to set the Real-Time-Clock.
    9. The time clock and speaker icon should now work!

  6. Dont know if anyone has experienced this problem with tosh pro satellites before but at the end of a session using headphones, pulling the headphone jack out of the socket should restore sound to the main speakers. This does not happen on my machine and it needs a reboot before sound is restored. Probably missed something obvious but nothing that I can find.

  7. My Toshiba satellite Pro C50 after windows reset said no sound input or output device present. Windows update did not cure the problem yet. Go to Device Manager found sound card was IDT sound card, did search for IDT driver. Found driver for win 8 called IDTv087, ran the file red cross by speaker disappeared temporarily. Then ran windows update this time driver was updated and sound now working fine.

  8. I have an older Toshiba laptop with windows 7. Sound is not working. computer says the headphones are working properly. I did all suggestions and ended finally going To BIOS setup. Unfortunately all suggestions say go to advanced and then devices. Not on the menu.
