Fix #1: End Competing Installation Programs
Sometimes Windows gets confused when installing software because it tries to install too many things at once and freezes up. Ending any programs or updates installing in the background can solve error 1618.
- Press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys on your keyboard at the same time
- Click on Start Task Manager
- Click on the Processes tab
- Find and left-click on MSIEXEC.MSI in the list
- Click End Process
- Try installing Java now
If that doesn’t work then move on to the next fix.
Fix #2: Restart Your Computer and Reinstall
- Restart your computer (turn it off, then turn it on)
- Download the offline Java installer: https://www.java.com/en/download/windows_offline.jsp
- Run the offline Java installer.
If that doesn’t work then move on to the next fix.
Fix #3: Uninstall Java Entirely and Reinstall it
- Uninstall Java from your computer by following the instructions here: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/uninstall_java.xml
- Restart your computer.
- Download the offline Java installer: https://www.java.com/en/download/windows_offline.jsp
- Run the offline Java installer.

I didn’t find any “MSIEXEC.MSI” process in my Windows 7 Task Manager, but there was one named “MSIEXEC.EXE”. Holding my breath and praying to the gods, I terminated that process, then tried installing Java again and Bingo! It worked! Java installed successfully.
However, the internet stopped working, but a system restart fixed that.
I had spent half the night trying to install Java, but error 1618 kept popping up. Even the Java website had insane and convoluted solutions, didn’t even list that error number.
I want you to know that your efforts are not in vain, they are appreciated by many like me, some halfway across the world.

can not find (msiexec.msi) only msiexec.exe
Verry good article. Fix#1 it work for me downloading Java for Windows 10. Thank you for informations.
Right Click on the installer -> Properties ->there after select compatibility tab from properties, click on compatibility trouble shooter, you are good to install.
Those who did not find…MSIEXEC.MSI in processes…go to details…you will get it…

Perfect fix! msiexec.msi is on the details TAB of the task manager. Took me a bit to find it as well :)
